When I was a kid, my mom would take me to the 99-cent store, and I'd put a toy in the cart. She'd gently explain we couldn't afford it - even at 99 cents. I'd beg to keep it in the cart anyway, just to feel, for a few aisles, what it was like to be able to buy something. Then, at the checkout, I put it back. I always put the toy back.
My brother and I didn't grow up with money. What we had was a family that worked hard for uneven pay and put everything it could into one thing - our education. That taught us early what most people learn the hard way: financial knowledge isn't evenly shared. Plenty of people know how to make money but have little to make it with - and once you finally have something, it's hard to know who to trust with it.
